　　　　　本文的目的是要討論自由民主體制中「國家認同」如何理解的問題。筆者的基本想法是：國家認同在內涵上包括三個主要層面 -- 族群認同、文化認同與制度認同。族群認同是一個人基於客觀的血緣連帶或主觀認定的族裔身分而對特定族群產生的一體感，文化認同是由於分享共同的歷史傳統、習俗規範以及集體記憶所形成的心理歸屬，而制度認同則是建立於對特定的政治、經濟、社會制度的肯定所產生的公民認同。不同的社會在建構集體認同時，有的主要訴諸血緣族群的關係，有的強調共享的文化傳承，又有的以合理的政治經濟制度為號召。而在一個採行自由主義原則的民主制度裡，則必然以第三個層面為其國家認同 的主要憑藉。這是因為自由主義在基本理念上不能接受族群民族主義教條，同時也排斥文化社群對個體自主性原則的侵擾。但是自由主義認同觀試圖超越民族主義（不管是族群或文化性的民族主義）的作法，最後仍然無法解決某些根本問題，這使得自由主義不得不正視族群與文化認同在「國家認同」構成上的力量。這篇文章所要討論的就是這些概念之間的糾葛，以及自由主義的國家認同如何可能的問題。
　　　　　The article analyzes how the idea of national identity is conceived in a liberal democracy.I argue that national identity is a multi-dimensional concept:it is ethnic in terms of origin and generation, cultural in terms of memory and belonging, and institutional in terms of legitimacy and recognition. While different communities build their national identity according to different conditions, a liberal democracy is to construct its national identity primarily on institutional bases--because liberalism is neither compatible with ethnic, nor cultural nationalism.Nevertheless, the liberal attempt to elude nationalism is never fully accomplished. This makes the story between liberalism, nationalism, and national identity more complicated than many have considered.
