　　　　　區域是一個古老的概念，而且是一個具有許多不同涵意的用詞。區域地理學一直以其綜合性，而與系統地理學的解析性呈現既對立又互補的關係，形成區域的描述與區域的分析之間的張力。本文首先分別自區域研究的觀念、區域描述、區域分析、及區域整合等層面，探討傳統區域研究的課題。其次就實徵論、景觀論、實證論，分述傳統區域研究方法的發展。接著自傳統區域研究的困境，追溯「新」區域地理學的出現及新區域地理學的主要議題，最後則以對晚近研究方法的反省結尾。新區域地理學發展至今，關於區域描述和分析的完整指導方針尚未出現，仍有許多猶待開發的研究領域及議題。建構一個地域的概念，或是了解任一特定的地域，是一個理論的挑戰。意謂著須結合地理學內不同分支所獲得的許多系統性之了解，致力於開拓地理學想像的地基。以期能使真正具地理學特質的經驗研究能夠在「地方之間」及「現代與後現代之間」取得一個適當的位置。 with a perspective on traditional research methods. Issues in new regional geography that needs to be addressed are enormous and a complete guideline on the description and the analysis of a region is still missing. It is a challenge to the theoretical construction of the concepts of region and to grasp or comprehend the meaning, nature, or importance of a region. It provides a ground of geographical imaginations to integrate or synthesize the knowledge of different branches of geography.
