This paper aims to classify and analyze the metaphorical expressions used in the news coverage of the 1997 Taiwan County Magistrate Election. It analyzes the social and cultural content of key words and metaphors in newspapers and web sites on the election. The different sets of metaphors provide more concrete domains of experience in order for the voters and the candidates to understand the abstract and the unknown. They help to make sense of different political issues and evaluate the candidates' political views. Data were collected from newspaper coverage and web sites during the election period, roughly from June to November 1997. They provide an open forum where the interactions of the readers, the voters and the candidates were constantly using metaphors and metaphorical inferences to conceive, argue and negotiate socio-political issues. By classifying metaphors and looking into the socio-cultural contexts for their strategic functions, this paper hopes to reveal how metaphors influence our perceptions and interactions in a political discourse.
