In the era of knowledge economy , knowledge is considered as core resource of the firm , and from which its competitive advantage derives . Knowledge management(KM), as a result , is capturing much researchers’ and practitioners’ attention and becoming an important strategic issue in management . Based on configuration theory , this study tries to develop a KM classification system through the comparison of typology and taxonomy approaches . Also , a contingency fit framework which links the relationship within KM、organizational context and performance is developed . The major objectives of this study are to arouse scholars’ more interest in the explorations of KM configuration , and to provide practitioners some managerial insights on the KM project alternatives and the identification of multidimensional KM facets , through which the practitioners might be able to initiate a suitable KM project or improve their current KM efforts , and at last to enhance the KM performance .
In typology(deductive)approach , this study is founded on the organizational learning theory and adopt organizational learning types and IT platform orientations for organizational communication to classify the KM configurations into four types : extended library 、 computer mainframe 、 charisma and network . To depict these 4 KM configurations , three profile dimensions are abstracted : KM strategies 、 KM procedures and KM infrastructure . After reviewing literature , this study abstract 4 context variables for the contingency framework to examine their impacts on the KM decision . The context variables include knowledge characteristics 、 task characteristics 、the locus of knowledge and social capital .
In taxonomy(inductive)approach , a quantitative empirical study is executed to verify the utility of the KM classification system which derives from deductive approach . In addition , the “ ideal type fit model “ and “ contingent hybrid fit model “ are tested to examine that typology approach is batter than taxonomy approach in explaining KM performance variations .
Thus , this study provides two major contributions :
1.Two configuration approaches are compared to derive a theoretical and empirical based KM classification system .
2.Four context variables are abstracted to develop a contingency fit framework which examines the relationship between fit model and KM performance .
