本文所謂「擇日行為」,是指中國人參考《通書》或《農民曆》選擇特別時間做特別事的慣習。本文嘗試解釋何以某些事情需要慎重擇日?在擇日行為後面,有怎樣的思考模式? 作者首先說明擇日的有關內容,包括擇日事項、神煞系統的建立、無法擇日時之權變措施,以及擇日的「時間」性質。其次,在擇日行為中,時間本身被當成工具而操作,是故繼之說明關於時間的不同概念,包括「社會文化時間」與「神聖時間」。前一概念建立於世俗的社會文化活動中,後者則與超自然世界之活動相連。最後,討論擇日行為的意義。 本文結論指出,擇日是就「神聖時間」而言,此概念隱含擇日行為的宇宙觀與思考模式,而於選擇時間內所從事之活動,則對當事人有非常的價值:使一個人或家族、社群由某地位「過渡」到另一地位。作者以為,擇日是一種象徵行為,是行動者策略性的運用時間,具有整合人類活動於超自然世界之意義,其目的在使人類的過渡活動配合或不至於影響(沖犯)超自然世界的活動,使得行動者,或是參與者得以趨吉避凶。
The so-called “day-choosing behavior” means that Chinese refer to certain calendars to choose an auspicious or to avoid an unlucky day for a special event. This article explains why some events need to choose a special time, and the thinking model behind this day-choosing behavior. The author, firstly, examines the content concerning day-choosing including the events of day-choosing, the establishment of spirits system, the alternative when it is impossible to choose an auspicious day, as well as the nature of time in day-choosing. Secondly, in day-choosing behavior, time is manipulated as a tool, therefore, different concepts about time will be explained. The time concepts include “sociocultural time” and “sacred time” The former is used in the profane sociocultural activities, while the latter is associated with supernatural world activities. Afterward, the significance of day-choosing is discussed. The conclusion points out that day-choosing is applied to“sacred time” concept which implies a special worldview and thinking model. The activities held within a chosen time have an extraordinary meaning for the actor: to transfer a person, family or social group from one position to another. The author suggests that day-choosing is a symbolic behavior. It is the actor who makes use of the time strategically to integrate human activities to supernatural world. The purpose is to allow the human's transitional activities to incorporate or not to influence (offend) the supernatural world activities so that the actor or the participants will pursue good fortune and shun the course of calamity.
