The main purposes of this study were 1) to understand how children’s picture books in sex education were presented; 2) to learn what kinds of sex knowledge were given in children’s picture books; 3) to investigate the meanings of sex education in children’s picture books; 4) to analyze the cultural perspectives in children’s picture books. Five children’s picture books in sex education which all featured the birth of a child were selected in this study. Content analysis was used to analyze and interpret the drawings and stories of these five picture books. This study found that the children’s picture books were 1)written in the form of fairytales, 2)described in detailed perspectives, 3)presented from both child’s and/or adult’s point of views on sex, and 4)exactly child’s perspectives. The following sex knowledge was present in children’s picture books: physical differences of a man and a woman, marriage, making love, pregnancy and the development a body, giving birth to a child, and other specific knowledge. With regard to the meanings of sex, all the five picture books contain that 1)man and woman lover each other and they raise families, 2)they give birth to children, and 2)they enjoy having sex. In addition, all these books presented the meanings of sex from multi-culture perspectives. This paper stresses the importance of presenting the issues of sex education form children’s perspectives. Moreover, the diversity, of viewpoints on sex education should be respected and encouraged. Last, more efforts should be devoted in developing our own children’s picture books in sex education.
