Abstract
The purpose of the study is to explore: how counselors are affected by significant life events after their engagement in counseling practices, their course of adjustment after experiencing these significant events, and the way they interpret these events. Narrative study method was adopted to conduct in-depth interviews with six counselors with practical experience ranging from 7 to 17 years, in an attempt to present their life stories from the viewpoints of the research participants. The results are as follows:
1.The significant life events experienced by the research participants include: loss, new relationships, religious beliefs, external environments and professional contacts. The influence of these events on them includes: changes in life philosophy and value, caring more for others, changing their perception of things, improvement in dealing with other people and showing greater consideration, better self-understanding and self-acceptance. In addition, these events have four common features, as follows:
(1) The significant events per se do not have any fixed characteristics. Their significance comes from the self-perception of the research participants, in other words, how the research participants view themselves after an event occurs.
(2) The significant events include negative and positive events, and both placed pressure on the research participants; however, in the long run, the results always led to their ‘growth’.
(3) The impact of religious belief on the research participants is comprehensive. Religious belief changes their vision and provides them with life values, objectives and norms in dealing with things. It exerts a great influence on soothing their souls.
(4) The significant events not only affect the personal lives of the research participants, but also significantly impact their professionalism.
2. After experiencing the significant events, the research participants turn their negative emotions into positive ones; their low self esteem into an objective attitude in viewing themselves; complaints and conflict changed to tolerance and acceptance in their interpersonal relationships. Professionally, they develop wholehearted interactions. They grow because they find a proper way to adjust, as a result of knowledge learning and good interactions with important others or superiors, which allow them to perceive another kind of interpersonal experience. Their willingness to change is mainly attributable to three factors:
(1) By comprehending the helplessness of themselves and others in real life, they learn to grasp reality and make headway towards their goals.
(2) The correction process related to their defects occurs upon introspection, after they see their own demands in regard to others.
(3) Change is a transformative process through continual knowledge learning and interactive verification related to the trials of life.
3. In terms of the exploration of the life stories of the research participants, the study find that they were all related to their original life issues. The significant events are only factors triggering their self-growth and guiding them towards spiritual and individual integration.
Based on the results, recommendations are offered for counseling practitioners, local counseling education, and future related research, as well as to serve as reference for researchers’ introspection.
