The five poems on "Returning to Country Farming Life" is one of the most famous poem of its kind. This paper aims to have a comprehensive reading and analysis on them. First, from the discussion of the timing of the poems, the author tries to relate the poems to the idea of cyclical life, penetrate into Tao's inner world, seek the reasons for Tao's return and his leading of a hermit life and finally clarify the related debates on the timing of Tao's poems. Second, by means of close reading and thick description, the author reads between lines to ponder upon different assumptions related to the poet and his time. The foci are especially on the autobiographical poems, the poems on returning to country farming life, the motif on pursuing, and the hidden meanings in different cultural codes. All these efforts try to get rid of the standard impression of Tao and disclose the inner conflicts and tension of the poems. This kind of close reading is a pleasant one. Last, based on archetype analysis the author devotes himself in the structural analysis of this group poem. The author points out the hidden archetype of four seasons. This archetype can always be found in Tao's poems and essays. There is a lack in the analysis of group poems in modern scholarship. This paper also tries to provide a new dimension to ponder on with the study of Tao's poems and even ancient group poems.
