Drawing upon insights triggered by Mikhail Bakhtin’s idea of ‘heteroglossia’, this essay provides a reflexive account of the author regarding the role of a researcher as part of Taiwan academia. Central to this concern is the present and future of communication studies in Taiwan, with special attention to the dialectic relationship between the individual researcher and his/her community. While exploring how Bakhtin’s ‘heteroglossia’ might be understood or misunderstood, the author emphasizes the importance of dialogues among individual members, from which the enriching effects on the community can be expected.
