Four Marvelous Masterpieces differentiate themselves from one another, in terms of thematic thought and artistic performance; how to evaluate Four Marvelous Masterpieces has aroused controversy. As a result, their complexity of various versions and unique times has caused previous researchers to delve into Four Marvelous Masterpieces respectively, rather than analyze the common ground – themes and values – of Four Marvelous Masterpieces. Because of the interaction between elegant and vulgar cultures, Four Marvelous Masterpieces, to some extent, deconstruct the rigorous seniority and human relations set up by the Neo-Confucianism of Song and Ming dynasties. Still, Four Marvelous Masterpieces, instead of deviating from Confucian moral ideal, symbolize the resurgence of core values and the internal self-correction. This thesis takes the dynamics of human relations as the research approach and analyzes the changing essence of moral values from their external structures. This thesis aims to examine how moral values have been embodied and transformed in Four Marvelous Masterpieces. This thesis further interprets the texts of Four Marvelous Masterpieces and their cultural phenomena. Therefore, we can gain a deeper understanding about what makes Four Marvelous Masterpieces everlasting masterpieces.
