　　　　　本文討論十七世紀荷蘭文獻記載下，位臺灣中部原住民強人「大肚王」統治的內涵；文章嘗試以地理學的環境、空間與區域等觀點，討論當時「大肚王」統治興起的原因，及荷蘭東印度公司削弱其力量的方式。

　　　　　 The paper discusses the nature of Quataongh regime of Central Taiwan based on the Dutch documentary sources in the seventeenth century. It attempts to utilize the environmental, the spatial and the regional perspectives offered by the discipline of geography to argue for the expansion of the regime, as well as the challenge from the Dutch East India Company.
