Historical consciousness and literary emotion──a study of Wu-Ziguang's historical and literary views of a confucian scholar in taiwan in the qing dynasty
Abstract
Wu Zi-guang (1819-1883) was a well-known Hakka-Confucian who relocated to Taiwan during the Daoguang period. He has unique views especially in classical writing, criticism and historical insights.《Yi-Du-Pi-Ji》、《San-Chang-Jhuei-Bi》and《Jing-Yu-Za-Lu》are his main works. Among them, 《Yi-Du-Pi-Ji》is his representative work. He devoted his life to the study of classics, historiography and ancient writings, regardless of the length of his life. The rich content of his works can indeed show his academic qualities in the study of history and ancient literature. However, it did not notice that the real academic concern of Wu-Ziguang in his life was actually the study of Confucian classics and history . Therefore, through the investigation, analysis and conclusion of this article, we can discover the “historical criticism of the spirit of forgiveness” and the ancient literature view are the representation of his historical consciousness and Literary emotion. It is also the ultimate concern of his academics.
First of all, in the " criticism of the spirit of forgiveness ", because of the experience of”loyalty and forgiveness” (《Zhongyong》), Wu-Ziguan understands what is the Tao. In the relationship between classics and history,In order to expand the purpose of "historical can govern the country," he emphasized that ancient historiography and classics are one. He uses the classics as the source of truth, and historiography is for empirical application.The particularity of his theory of history lies in the principle of " empathy " as a historical understanding.And to express different opinions on the traditional " Spring and Autumn Annals " blaming the views of the wise men.
The second, in terms of literature, Wu-Ziguang has a profound research on the study of ancient prose. Therefore, this thesis is based on his ancient prose. From the relationship between literature and Tao,or the cultivation or psychological reaction that should be possessed in the creation of ancient prose.And the analysis of the similarities and differences between ancient prose and eight-part essay, and reflect on the ancient prose theory of Tongcheng School. Finally, it is to establish a special professional academic style(innovation, style view) and so on.
Among the many Confucians in Taiwan in the Qing Dynasty. Few Confucians can be as good as Wu-Ziguang, with good talent and high moral self-discipline. Wu-Ziguang is passionate about academics and actively participates in public affairs. when he is striving to improve the quality of Taiwan's society and culture, he also leaves precious assets for Taiwan Confucianism.
