The position Eileen Chang holds in the contemporary literary history of China is unshakable. It has nearly been a noted school of thought to study her life story and her works, and this can be seen in the total amount of related research along with books on them. Likewise, women consciousness has attracted much attention in the discussions of contemporary academic research and is still in focus up to date. Therefore, this study intends to explore the characterization of the female protagonists in two of her novels, namely, Liu-Su Pai in Love in a Fallen City and Chia-Chih Wang in Lust and Caution. Their life stories and their active search for happiness are discussed so as to eke a brighter way out of the tragic atmospheres and grim styles in most of Eileen Chang's literary works of art.
