Since the implementation of “ten-year plan for long-term care”, insufficient quality and quantity of geriatric social workers is emphasized. Professional competencies for geriatric social workers changed after the promotion of elderly welfare and long-term care policies. This study conducted 4 focus groups and 3 individual interviews to collect data. A total of 26 social workers and managers, 5 male and 21 female, age 24 to 52, 9 to 165 months geriatric social work experiences, from long-term care institutes and community service organizations participated in this study. Colaizzi's data analysis method was used to extract information and meaning from the words. Four themes emerged to construct professional competencies of geriatric social workers: the roles of geriatric social workers conduct, expectations of professional competencies for geriatric social workers, the difficulties and pressure of geriatric social workers in the workplace, and expectations of gerontological social work education. The researcher made three findings and recommendations: strengthen geriatric social workers professional competencies to respond to practical work requirements, build a comprehensive system of gerontological social work education, training, and evaluation, and continue the development of related researches.
