Taiwan has gone through radical changes in its history over the past centruy, which, to native intellectuals were also suffering and miserable years. During the reign of the Japanese government, some of these intellectuals fled to the "motherland"(Japan)and some to the "inland"(the Chinese mainland), and some chose to remain on the island (Taiwan). But no matter where they were and what they were doing, they never stopped thinking about what path Taiwan should take. Even with different beliefs, they could still be active in various political and social movements as well as in some cultural activities. Moreover, they showed their interest in action pictures (movies), a new fashion at that time, and in stage plays. Under the reign of both the Japanese and Chinese governments, the intellectuals' radical style had brought them a life of sadness, forbearance, and not much choice. Chang (1904-1965)was no doubt one such person. Drifting from place to place all his life, he was not only a revolutionary, philosopher, and writer, but also a movie director and active in theater. His political ideals were clearly revealed in his early experience in theater. After suffering through many political events, he made a compromise and devoted himself to the movie industry in his later years, hoping he could still educate society somehow. Chang had said, "On the stage of life, there is nothing but fighting and gambling. "Through his life, he played an inferior role on the political stage as did his plays and movies during the pre-war or post-war period.
