The study of clients’ empowerment in the Solution-Focused Brief Counseling
Jiun-De Lin
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to identify the nature of the clients’ perceived empowerment in the counseling process of solution-focused brief counseling (SFBC). The meaning of empowerment, the immediate effect of empowerment to the clients, the relations between the counseling techniques and empowerment, and the forming process of clients’ perceived empowerment were included. Three voluntary clients received 5-7 sessions of SFBC. An in-depth interview were given to clients after each counseling of session with in 24 hours. Eighteen transcripts were collected then analyzed through the phenomenological approach. The main findings were as follow:
Three types of clients’ perceived empowerment were found. They were self-oriented empowerment, interaction-oriented empowerment and action-oriented empowerment. Five elements, which were promotion, efficacy, competence, power and energy, were included in the types of self-oriented empowerment. The element of others-help was included in the interaction-oriented empowerment, and self-help was included in the action-oriented empowerment.
Two dimensions were identified as the immediate effect of empowerment to the clients received SFBC. They were the intrapersonal dimension, which could be divided into cognition-oriented, affection-oriented and behavior-oriented clients’ inside effects, and the interpersonal dimension, which was clients’ outside effect.
The relations between the counseling techniques and clients’ empowerment were found. The counseling techniques included the counseling relationship between the counselor and clients, the counselor’s attitude, and the SFBC skills. Three categories of SFBC skills, which were generalized from twenty-two detailed skills, were frame skills, operation skills, and reflection skills, were related to clients’ empowerment.
Four factors were found in the process of forming empowerment of the clients in SFBC. First, the “preceding factor” included both the inducing and motivating elements. Secondly, the “facilitating factors” were found as counseling relationship, counselor’s attitude and the SFBC skills. Thirdly, the “empowerment” was the clients’ perceived empowerment. Last, the “empowerment outcome” was the immediate effect on the empowered clients. From the sense of disempowerment to empowerment, the process of forming empowerment was co-constructed by the counselor and the client. First, the clients identified the problem as helplessness, and then promoted to solve the problems. Furthermore, they were facilitated to solve the problems by co-constructing the effective solution ways and experiencing the desirable life. Finally, the clients acquired empowerment and experienced the empowerment outcome.
Based on these results, discussions and recommendations were proposed for the future research and implications.
Keywords: Solution-Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC), empowerment, phenomenological data analysis, college.
