This paper Challenges the epistemology of mainstream social science by raising the issue of indigenizaiton. It uses an analogy to illustrate why scientific universalism is misleading. However, the paper questions the validity of relativism at the same time. Instead, it welcomes an epistemology that incorporates the element of coincidence or contingency. The paper also examines the historical process that has brought scientism into China studies.
