Yang Kui is a well-known literary author and social movement leader in Taiwan history. It has been very well known in academic circles that he led Peasants’ Organization during Japanese occupation. However, under the shadow of White Terror, most past research has avoided the sensitive political taboo of the 2/28 Event so that Yang Kui’s activities in the early postwar period was unknown. By means of first-hand historical material and the memories of Yang Kui’s relatives and friends, this essay will draw the outline of Yang Kui's variety of experiences in the early postwar period, in which he devoted himself to construct a new Taiwan, led or participated the Liberation Committee, the New Life Promotion Team, the Livelihood Association, the Taichung City head quarters of the KMT, the Relief Committee of Taiwanese Revolution Martyrs’ Descendents, as well as The Political Construction Association. During the period of the 2/28 Event, he resolutely undertook armed revolution. After he was released from jail, he supported the “Wheat Wave Song Team”--a student democracy society, and drafted the Declaration of Peace. This essay will help us understand how Yang Kui dealt with the changing postwar situation, restarted, ran after Taiwan Autonomy, and persisted in Taiwan-oriented culture.
