女性的自我與其性別、以及與性別相關的社會文化因素是糾結在一起的，女性因為自己性別這個不可變因素而在發展自我意識過程中有怎樣的領會與認識，是本研究所欲探究的重點。故事主角明嘉以自己身為女性的立場，闡述圍繞自己生命中的女性角色與其觀察，也在這些諸多因素的影響下，讓自我成形。明嘉談到了自己的性別自我的發展包括：（一）傳統女性期許與行為，遵從典型女性行為，甚至加入男性陣營撻伐女性；（二）覺察到自己身為女性的不平與矛盾，企圖從書與學習中去拓展自己的認知；（三）在實際生活中履行、實驗，卻也發現不一致的情況；（四）主動批判兩性角色中社會的不公平，也批判女性對於同儕的不支持與落井下石；（五）對於男女兩性在社會中的處境抱持較為公允的態度，認為都是社會期待的受害者，願意為兩性的人權繼續努力。也可將這五個發展區分為五期，依序是：（一）混沌期；（二）初醒；（三）衝突與驗證期；（四）豁朗期與（五）統整平穩期。
Female’s self and gender are intertwined with sex-related socio-cultural context. How a female acknowledges herself regarding her development with an inevitable “gender” variable? This study is an attempt to explore a female’s gendered-self and her awareness while embedded in the socio-cultural context. The narrator explored her gender-self development as: (1) Abiding by traditional female expectations and roles without awareness; (2) Sensing the inequality and conflict as a female; (3) Experimenting her roles in daily life and facing dilemma and conflict; (4) Criticizing the unfairness generated from social forces; and (5) Being more objective about the reality of both sex in current society.
