本文藉由三組案例來考察過去學界如何使用「美術」與「藝術」這兩個詞語，檢視「建築」、「雕塑」研究的興起與地位的變遷，反思中國美術史學作為一門現代人文科學的發展過程。比較1940與1980年代，雖然學者都以「美術」、「藝術」來規範研究對象，但是在實際運作之中強調或弱化了部分組成。經由故宮體制的洗禮，1980年代中國美術史研究的取材逐漸限定在以繪畫、書法、器物為主，雕塑為輔的範圍。在這兩個時期，學者分別重新選擇並界定何為美術史研究的主要對象。
This article attempts to rethink the foundations of Chinese art historiography from a historical perspective. This article uses two terms, "fine arts" (meishu or yishu) and "art" (yishu), as a point of departure to analyze the overall development of Chinese art historiography. The meaning of "fine arts" and "art" is explored here in local context. The changing meanings and criteria of art itself in Chinese art historiography remains relatively under-explored. I attempt to demonstrate that there were distinct discourses of the criteria of art and the development of the studies of Chinese art history from the 1930s to the 1980s.
