The purpose of this research is to investigate the present situation of teacher career development in Taiwan's elementary and junior high schools and to analyze the teachers' background variables, and the relationship between factors influencing the teachers' careers and ther present situation with regard to career development. The objects of the research model are teachers in Taiwan's elementary and junior high schoos. In order to ensure accurate representation in the study, the random sampling method was employed at these different levels. The samples were taken from elementary and junior high schools in twenty counties and cities of Taiwan, as well as Taipei and Kaohsiung, but excluding the counties of Chin-Men and Lien-Chaing. Questionnaires were sent to 1750 senior high school teachers, 1530 junior high school teachers, and 1670 elementary school teachers. In total, 3483 questionnaires were completed and returned: 1270 from senior high school teachers, 1075 from teachers of junior high school, and 1138 from teachers of elementary school. Of all the questionnaires issued, 70.36% were completed and returned. Following are conclusions obtained from the study and some suggestions for further improvements: 1. Junior high school and elementary school teachers' career development can be divided into five stages. 2. Teachers' own ambition, achievement, administrative management and school atmosphere all affect career development. Further suggestions: 1. Clarify teachers' perception of career development and condense their common knowledge of career advancement. 2. Organize the main factors of future career development accrding to the present situation in junior high/elementary schools. 3. Implement a graded system for the appointment of teachers and promote teacher career development. 4. Give increased impetus to teachers' career development, thus promoting the professional advancement of teachers.
