There are two purposes of this research, (1) To design the parent-focused program - The Training Program of Parent-child Communication for Language Development Delayed Children; (2) To execute the program in the institution, and to assess the effect upon the communication of Language Development Delayed Children and their parents.
About the design of this program, we refer to both domestic and foreign references first, and draw up the curriculum content of “The Training Program of Parent-child Communication of Language Development Delayed Children”. Then, we invite some scholars, specialists, and parents to provide their ideas for improving this program.
About the evaluation of this program, we adopt a kind of single subject design - the delayed multiple probe design across subject. Our subjects are three Language Development Delayed Children and their parents. The assessment methods are included behavior observation, language sample analysis, and parent report. The results are as follows:
1. All of the three parents have positive attitude towards this program, and indicate that they all have learned the parent-child communication skills from Milieu Teaching Strategies or Responsive Interaction Strategies.
2. The three parents’ applications of Milieu Teaching Strategies have increased, retained obviously, and all of them have evident generalizations in treatment period and preservation period, while accepting video observation. However, the changes of their applications of Milieu Teaching Strategies which they mentioned in self-report are inconsistent.
3. Base on the parents’ self-report, their applications of Responsive Interaction Strategies have increased, retained obviously, and evident generalizations in treatment period and preservation period. However, the changes of their applications of Responsive Interaction Strategies during the video observation are inconsistent.
4. No matter in baseline period, treatment period, or preservation period, the frequency of the three parents’ applications of Milieu Teaching Strategies is higher than Responsive Interaction Strategies while accepting video observation. And the program has strengthened this inclination.
5. The three children’s applications of Passive Communication and Verbal Response have increased, retained obviously, and also have evident generalizations in treatment period and preservation period, while accepting video observation. However, the changes of their applications of Active Communication and Nonverbal Response are inconsistent.
6. No matter during the video observation or parents’ daily observation, the three children’s accumulations of Additional Vocabulary have increased continuously and have evident generalizations in treatment period and preservation period. Besides, the program has promoted the accumulation of Additional Vocabulary; even so, the changes of the three children’s Mean Length of Utterance are not obvious.
Key words: children with developmental delay, language delay, communication behavior, parent-focused language intervention program.
