It is often considered that linguistics is a difficult subject, and Formosan linguistics is particularly challenging. Consequently, though there are about four hundred scholars working on linguistics in Taiwan, there are only about 20 active Formosan linguists in the country. It is well known that Formosan languages are very important, especially since most of them are becoming extinct. Hence, it is vital to have more linguists involved in this field. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, MA theses and Ph.D. dissertations on Formosan linguistics are presented, so as to reveal current trends and accomplishments in Formosan linguistics. Second, the expected research direction of Formosan linguistics and anticipated government assistance for this research area are presented, in the hope that we will be entering a new era of Formosan linguistics.
