Due to the active promotions from the Council for Cultural Affairs and the trend of diverse changes in campus planning, public art on campus has become more important and popular in elementary schools. But for elementary school students and teachers, public art on campus does not just mean displaying artistic productions and decorations in campus spaces. It should also involve some deeper meanings regarding school management, teachers-students interaction and instruction. Therefore, this paper discusses public art on elementary school campuses. It shows that public art on campus is a complex concept which includes four elements: placement in campus spaces, participation of school members, educational meanings, and aesthetic performance. Six major characteristics and four crucial functions concerning public art on campus are also discussed. Furthermore, the paper analyses concrete examples of public art in elementary schools in terms of its material forms, placements, exhibitions, and processes of participation. The conclusion proposes some suggestions to improve public art on elementary school campuses.
