本研究探索女性自助旅行者之安全考量和因應策略、動機及旅行後的影響與改變。本研究採取深度訪談法，於2004年4月至9月間訪問了15位女性自助旅行者，受訪者年齡介於26－45歲，教育程度與收入偏高，旅行經驗4－15年。研究結果顯示，受訪者旅行前夕多顧慮安全問題，旅行後發展出自我調適與防衛機制。受訪者具有多重動機，可區分為「從常軌逃離」、「追求冒險」、「體驗自由與獨特感」與「自我實現」。自助旅行後主要轉變有三：首先是工作型態與生活的調整；其次是利他主義抬頭；第三是女性主體性的覺醒。研究結論有三，（一）、尋求自我實現是受訪者最主要的旅行動機。（二）、受訪者暫公共空間現身，具有鬆動性別權力關係的功能。（三）、受訪者從事自助旅行且樂此不疲，係受到大環境、人際與個人因素，以及旅行後的體驗與利益交互影響。文末並對學術界、旅遊業者、女性、及未來研究提出建議。
The purpose of the study was to explore women backpackers' motivations, safety conce4rns and coping strategies, and post-travel influences and changes. Qualitative in-depth interview method was used to interview 15 women backpacker between April and September of 2004. The respondent were fairly affluent, well educated, 26-45 years of age, with 4-15 years of travel experiences. The results indicated that the respondents expressed their safety concerns prior to the travel. They developed strategies to cope with the risk afterwards. The results revealed that there were multiple motivations including escape, risk/sensation seeking, freedom and uniqueness experiences, and self-actualization. Post-travel changes included: (1) work and life attitude changes, (2) being altruistic, (3) women subjectivity awareness. Three conclusions were drawn. First, self-actualization was found the major travel motivation. Second, gender power relationships were challenged. And lastly, macro as well as inter-intra personal factors and benefits experienced after travel were factors that keep the respondents travel. Suggestions were mode for academics, travel industry, women, general public, and future research.
