輟學問題雖然早已存在台灣社會之中，不過受到學術界的重視，卻是近幾年來的事。復以邇來幾件重大少年非行事件，涉案少年多屬輟學或有其他不穩定就學行為者，輟學行為與非行等偏差行為因此被劃上等號，事實是否如此？本論文將有深入之探討。此外，教育統計發現，台灣地區的國中生的輟學經驗約為國小學生的10倍﹔且發現其行為之多樣化，威脅安詳之生活空間，益加突顯國中生輟學行為之複雜性與嚴重性，已到刻不容緩的地步。
本論文以官方資料分析、個案深入訪談，和問卷調查等三種研究方法來解析國中生輟學行為原貌﹔首先分析近廿多年來社會環境變遷；其次深入訪談22個個案及其家人、朋友、老師，探索其輟學之歷程及其與偏差行為之關聯性﹔再以分層隨機叢集抽樣法，問卷調查一般國中學生、輟學生與犯罪少年共2,112人，並將各縣市之地區特性納入一同分析，以建構適合解釋台灣地區國中生輟學行為的本土性理論模式。
本論文研究發現，國中生輟學行為發生之前，即已有翹課、逃學等不穩定就學的行為經驗，且多與校外朋友結伴共同為之。本論文研究所建構的各項因素都對國中生輟學行為均產生不同程度而顯著的影響，其影響程度大小依序為：社會學習因素＞家庭動力因素＞家庭結構因素＞社會鉅觀因素﹔其中以交往不良友儕之影響力最大。此外，偏差行為之成因更形複雜，與輟學行為雖屬不同之事件，惟研究發現兩者具有明顯的互動關係。
在相關理論之驗證方面，本論文研究結果支持緊張理論對於輟學行為之發生，係一種對低社經地位、缺陷家庭，以及與家人、學校教師關係不良等壓力的回應，但不認同該理論有關輟學後的偏差行為會減少的觀點。同時也支持社會連結鍵理論的論點，亦即輟學國中生對父母、學校(教師)的依附愈薄弱，其致力於功課、讀書的時間愈少﹔但不認同其依附友儕可減少輟學或偏差行為之論點，而該理論對於依附友儕解釋之缺陷，卻由社會學習理論所補足，研究發現國中生輟學行為主要是交往不良友儕所促成，經由家人輟學行為的學習也是重要成因。簡言之，國中生輟學行為之發生，符合緊張理論主張之論點，而行為之愈益嚴重化，卻又由社會連結鍵理論所承接，最終之犯罪行為之發生，更與社會學習理論之論點相符，國中輟學生之所以發生犯罪行為，係長期與犯罪友儕接觸、交往的結果。
同時研究結果也支持危機樹理論，輟學生係經由特定社會鉅觀因素，家庭、學校環境涵養之下，而有低自我控制之特質之後，展現出多樣化的偏差行為。此外，絕大部份未輟學，或輟學後再復學的國中生，主要是因為自身內在改變，以及身處環境的正向力量超越負向力量的現象，就像拔河競賽獲得勝利一樣。
本論文除根據研究結果提出「國中生輟學行為暨偏差行為發生模式」，做為解釋台灣地區國中生輟學行為之基礎外，並將研究結果與拔河運動(tug of war)結合而成「國中生輟學行為拔河理論」，認為輟學或偏差行為之發生，係家庭、學校、友儕之正向力量小於對等一方負向力量之結果。若能掌握「TUG致勝原則」，亦即「通力合作」(T, teamwork)、「承受負責」(U, undertake)、「讚美稱頌」(G, glorify)，發揮正向力量，即能預防輟學行為之發生，或將輟學生拉回正方，否則將使輟學生展現出「WAR行為」，亦即「退縮行為」(W, withdrawal)、「攻擊行為」(A, aggression)、「復仇行為」(R, revenge)。
最後，依據本論文研究發現，以及「國中生輟學行為拔河理論」，從輟學生、父母、老師、家人、友儕、社區，甚至社會的力量，研擬國中生輟學行為之防治對策，供有關單位再擬定或執行輟學防治對策時的參考，期以發揮防治國中生輟學行為之發生，避免輟學問題惡化，再造安詳和樂的生活環境。
The problem of dropouts, many of them had committed many serious crime, has become more and more important issue in recent years on Taiwan. And we find dropout rate which junior students occurring is near 10 times than elementary ones. Many literatures have pointed out that the relations between dropout and delinquency are positive significantly. Will dropouts become delinquents or criminals? This dissertation, an empirical study integrating official data (22 years’ macro- social data) analysis, case study (22 cases) and questionnaire survey (2,112 samples), discusses the dropouts’ life courses and constructs a theoretical model interpreting the dropout problem on Taiwan.
We find that a junior student has unstable studying experience, i.e. cutting class and playing truancy et al., and accompany with out school friends will be a dropout firmly. The strongest bond with dropout is negative peers-association. So, social-learning factors are the key point theory to interpret dropout of junior student. Familial structural, familial functional, and social macro- factors play significant roles in dropout issues respectively. Dropout and deviance are caused by the same factors, existing not only causal relations but interactional ones, but they are two different events. Criminological theories, such as social-learning theory, social-bonding theory and strain theory, have better interpretation on dropout behavior in different aspects.
Dropout behavior is a response of pressure from low socio- economical status, dysfunctional family, and maladjustment in family and school. A dropout, having lower attachment on his parents and teacher, weaker involvement on school academic commitment and getting along with delinquent peers, will be a delinquent later. His life course just like the description of high- risk tree theory suggests: certain social macro factors, insufficient family and school life then, low self control, versatile deviant behavior finally. According to this empirical study, suggests a regression pattern called ‘junior dropout behavior and deviance model’. This model can be use to explain dropout events on Taiwan.
It’s a combat on prevention of junior dropout problem and juvenile delinquency. There are two competitive energy sources, positive and negative, while striving for dropout/deviance. This combat is just like a sport, tug of war. A dropout, standing on the middle while two side athletes competing, will fall into delinquency or crime when those positive energy sources are weaker than negative ones. Using TUG of WAR rule completely, i.e. family, school and community can bring into full play at teamwork (T), undertaking (U) and glorifying (G), the energy sources are positive then; this dropout will not to withdraw (W), be aggressive (A) and revenge (R).
The author then constructs theory of tug of war on dropout/deviance to explain the process how a teenager to become a juvenile delinquent. The stronger of positive energy sources of dropouts’ parents, teachers, peers, community, even the whole society, the easier to achieve the goal to regain a better living environment in Taiwan or in other western countries.
