傳統華人社會中，媳婦被視為是代間照護的當然人力，且具有照護的義務。而媳婦所處的照護情境及其觀點卻少被關注。本研究主要目的是探究當代媳婦的代間照護情境及其主體經驗。以公公或婆婆因失能在家接受照護的媳婦為研究對象，共訪談十三位婦女（32–52歲），訪談過程經錄音並繕打逐字稿。研究採行詮釋現象學取徑，解析當代媳婦的生活經驗與代間照護處境。
研究發現當代已婚女性對於媳婦角色的概念是一「歷史性」理解，而照護處境成為此理解的樣貌；即過去女性生活經驗的意義如何，便取決了現在處境的認識。而「道德媳婦」的意識型態，使得媳婦的生活樣貌具有非本真的生活經驗。她的故事敘說著媳婦/女兒身份的斷裂、及家人/家屋的轉變歷程，其生活處境亦在內人、外人與自家人的位置觀點中不斷地游移。當代媳婦遭逢從父權社會到個人主義之多元價值與信念盛行的轉渡期，性別的不平等仍普遍存在她所處的家庭照護情境當中。雖然媳婦於代間照護執行者的勞動角色已逐漸被家庭外籍監護工所取代，但當代媳婦的家庭照護處境仍受到性別角色的傳統刻板形象所綑綁。她們的故事呈現當代中間世代婦女的性別意識覺醒，及於父權、父系、父居家庭結構裡，代間照護意義的外部性顯露。
A daughter-in-law (DIL)has been viewed and requested as a major person having obligation in intergenerational caring in traditional Chinese society. However, few studies have been designed to understand daughters-in-law''s perspective of the caring situation. This qualitative study was conducted to explore daughters-in-law''s perspectives of their experience of intergenerational caring situation. Thirteen daughters-in-law (32-52 years old) who suffered father-in-law or mother-in-law with disability were interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analyzed by hermeneutic phenomenological approach.
The result indicates contemporary married woman regarding DIL’s role is a conceptual understanding of "historicity". Namely, DIL’s present caring situation was depended on the meaning of one’s past lived experience. The marriage causes a broken relationship between DIL and her primary family, reveals the essence of her existence. In modern society, DIL encounters various values and beliefs since patriarchal society to individualism. However, they will argue or confront this caregiving situation when gender-based inequities exist. Although the role of direct-caregivers from DIL was replaced by foreign workers, DIL is still struggling with traditional gender roles. Their stories are reflective accounts, which when DIL with awareness of feminism, reveal meaning of intergenerational care for externality in patriarchal, patrilineal, patrilocal family structure.
