The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of "Sexual Issues and Nursing Profession Development Program" for nursing students on knowledge of sexual healthcare, attitude to sexual healthcare, and self-efficacy for sexual healthcare. The samples were senior nursing students of 2-year senior college program from Department of Nursing, Chang Gung Institute of Technology in northern Taiwan. There were 95 participants in the experimental group who received the 12-week "Sexual Issues and Nursing Profession Development Program" taught by the author, and there were 95 participants in the control group who didn’t participate in the program. The study was based on the quasi-experimental research with pre-post test design. The longitudinal changes from the week right before starting the program (the baseline) to the follow-ups at the 1st week (post-test) and the 6th week (final test) right after receiving the program were estimated using the hierarchical linear models for evaluating the educational effectiveness.
1.The results showed that sexual healthcare education program had significantly positive changes on the students in the experimental group on knowledge of sexual healthcare, attitude to sexual healthcare, and self-efficacy for sexual healthcare.
2.The results revealed that the students in the experimental group showed significant improvements over those in the control group on knowledge of sexual healthcare, attitude to sexual healthcare, and self-efficacy for sexual healthcare.
3.“The holistic evaluation of teaching contents”: 88.7% of the students expressed ‘agree’ or ‘very agree’ to the content, and student’s most satisfactory items were “The content and range of teaching are proper” and “The class content can be understood”.
4.“The holistic evaluation of teaching methods”: 92.5% of the students revealed ‘agree’ or ‘very agree’ to the teaching methods, and student’s most satisfactory items were “The teacher was patient to explain and clarify students’ questions” and “The teaching was very clear and easy to be understood”. On homework design and assignment, 71.6% students showed ‘agree’ or ‘very agree’.
5.“Achievement of the goals on all teaching units”: 89.65% of the students expressed ‘agree’ or ‘very agree’ to the achievement of the goals. The teaching unit of “reproduction and sex” was the most satisfactory, followed by the units of “the multiple dimensions of sexuality”, “sexuality throughout the life cycle”, and “the sexual harassment in clinical practice”.
6.In general, the students in the experimental group were highly positive to the program, and appreciated the program to help them explore their sexual attitude, and improve their self-efficacy for discussing and communicating sexual concerns with patients. Most also expressed that the program help them overcome the barrier of the sexual healthcare and they won’t be afraid and reject to approach sexual healthcare issues in the future.
