(Andrew
In the globalizating world, human beings have encountered severe environmental degradation. In order to overcome ecological crises, this study aims to explore the
contemporary political philosopher---Andrew Dobson’s conception of ecological citizenship and its implications for the civic education in Taiwan. In the first part of this
study, the author interprets the background of this research and notions of ecological citizenship. Secondly, the author discusses the problem in relation to citizenship from the viewpoints of globalization and cosmopolitism. Thirdly, on the basis of Andrew Dobson’s conception of ecological citizenship, the author compares the traditional liberal and civic republic citizenship with the post-cosmopolitan citizenship by four distinctions: (1)
contract vs. non-contract; (2) public realm vs. private realm; (3) virtue vs. non-virtue, and
(4) territoriality vs. non-territoriality. Fourthly, the author explores the core notions of Andrew Dobson’s conception of ecological citizenship, including ecological citizenship’s non-territoriality, responsibilities, virtue and private realm. In the final part of this thesis,
the author gains concrete suggestions for enhancing students’ environmental literacy by implementing ecological citizenship education.
