Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between place-based education and ecological literacy in the elementary school. The researcher conducted online questionnaires to collect data from children of grades four and five of 48 elementary schools in Taiwan. The subjects filled out the questionnaire in computer classrooms, and 3224 copies valid questionnaires were collected.
The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The main conclusions of this thesis were summarized as follows:
1. The number of the students to participate in various activities of space-based education were obviously different.
2. The number of the students to join the activities of space-based education run by their school were obviously different from other school.
3. There were significant differences existing among the gender, grade and parental education level when ecological literacy was analyzed.
4. There were significant differences existing among school location, school size when ecological literacy was analyzed.
5. The demographic variables and the experience of Place-based Education at elementary schools have predicted students’ ecological literacy.
According to the results, the recommendations were provided for improving governmental policy, administration, teaching, activities and follow-up studies.
Keywords: Elementary school, Place-based education, Ecological literacy, Characteristic School.
