高士村為屏東縣牡丹鄉南排灣族村落，現址聚落為該村族人50餘年前，移建立者。而離現址7、8公里處林班地內名為Saqacengalj之石板屋舊居聚落，相傳為該族人入住恒春地區首居之地。據村中耆老口傳，此舊居聚落已有5、600年的歷史。以排灣族而言，家屋傳遞了族群的宇宙與社會認知，是排灣族人生時生活之中心，也是死後回歸之處，而其內部設施相互間有一定的空間關係位置，處處反映了其文化、社會的特質。另，排灣族是一階級社會，並施行長嗣繼承制，土地所有權、土地利用、分佈、擴展、與經濟景況等，都與其社會階級制度、組織息息相關。由空間議題的探討出發，當是進入這些文化、社會相關議題的基礎。因此，本文即以復原高士石板屋舊居的房舍結構與聚落模式為主要研究目標，期望能對幾百年前南排灣的聚落模式有所瞭解，並作為將來對各文化、社會面向議題討論的基礎。
Kau-shi village is located in Mu-dan County, Pin-dong District, at the southern tip of Taiwan. Its residents belong to the Southern Paiwan Group, one of the Taiwan indigenous populations. Kau-shi people had moved and established new settlements 6 times before they settled on the current village. Their oldest abandoned settlement, Saqacengalj, is located about 7 to 8 km from the village, a fascinated archaeological site full of amazing slate architectures, mystical folktale and academic information as well. The extent of this abandoned settlement is about 1.4 arcs, which includes more than 83stone structures dating to about 500 to600 years ago according to oral history of Kau-shi people. The result of this preliminary study on Saqacengalj includes an overall site map of the settlement layout, and maps and detailed drawings of the 83 architectural structures. The purpose of the initiate analyses was trying to reconstruct the settlement pattern and configuration of Saqacengalj for further study on cultural and social context of Southern Paiwan Group in the earlier eras, the possible extent of variations, and the trajectory of change as well.
