“The way of father and son”, advocated by the great Confucian master of the Han Dynasty, Tung Chung-shu (董仲舒), was the core construction of his philosophical theory that man is an integral part of nature. The author of this article tries to deduce and clarify Tung's philosophy by means of generalizing the relation of father and son in Chun Chiu Fan Lu (春秋繁露). According to Tung, “The way of father and son” refers to the priority sequence; that is, the priority for the senior and the junior. In turns of social structure, “the way of father and son” is the basis of public order. Therefore, to understand Tung's philosophy, one shall start with the interpretation of “the way of father and son”.
