藍張興庄的拓墾事業，對臺中盆地的發展影響深遠。就政策的層面，拓墾的過程中，涉及在臺武員私置田產，自立墾號「藍張興」越墾界外土地，挑戰清初對臺之海禁與山禁政策，私下包庇偷渡墾民來臺，違法越界私墾等問題。藍廷珍、藍日寵（藍天秀）與藍元枚祖孫三代歷任海疆大吏，藍廷珍越界報墾於前，藍元枚力爭保產於後，其時間適為雍正乾隆二朝近八十年間，也為藍張興庄墾業最為發達的階段。臺中盆地的拓墾，也於此際最盛，自大度溪北岸延伸向盆地內部，甚至越界拓墾旱溪以東的地區。台中盆地的發展，隨著藍張興庄墾業的擴張，初期聚落主要沿著盆地內溪流二側分布。犁頭店街作為漢人北越大肚溪向台中盆地拓墾的前哨站，其角色不僅是拓墾的據點、南北交通的端點，也是雍正9年至光緒13年間(1731-1887)百餘年間，台中盆地行政管理的中心。大墩街作為清代武力控制的中樞，初期作用在於防範原住民與漢人的衝突，後則轉為鎮壓漢人動亂的基地，因駐兵之故，大墩街成為盆地內部的拓墾中心。
