本文以人類學的民族誌研究為基礎，探討「傳統手工藝」在當代的社會文化 意涵。以苗栗苑裡藺草編織和花蓮秀林的太魯閣族織布作為研究對象，以呈現當代 「傳統手工藝」作為「無形文化遺產」的多種樣貌及其意義。當代，文化與經濟頻 繁甚至是緊密的互動關係下，經常衍生出文化商品化的批評。在文化產業與文化創 意產業的發展中，工藝產業是其中重要的一部份。本文主張，一個手工藝的物件， 來自於以下各項的結合：製作者的身體勞動、製作者所具有的知識和技術、製作者 與物件所身處的文化、以及物件本身，因此，工藝物件作為商品販售並不代表其他 部分的商品化，也不必然落入文化商品化，以致造成危害文化發展的困境。 相對於文化商品化的批判，筆者主張，朝向文化經濟的發展並不必然導致文化 內容的匱乏或甚至無法傳承。傳統手工藝作為無形文化遺產，最重要的是如何成為 活的遺產而代代相傳，因此，「想延續的是什麼？」是本文透過兩個研究對象欲探 討的主要議題。以太魯閣族織布而言，相對於織布的圖紋及其意義、或織布的色彩 配置等形式，當代織作者最想要傳遞延續下去的是在qabang 和ubung 物件背後， 母親給孩子和家人的那份心意。在苑裡藺草編織，看似充滿想延續與不想延續並存 的矛盾，事實上，在不想延續工藝生產形式的背後，其實是想延續工藝內涵的深厚 情感。其次，在希望延續的想法下，手工藝如何能夠延續？本文指出，關於商品化， 必須在當代併陳的各種狀況中區分，商品化之於文化是作為手段或是目的而存在， 亦即，作為目的，是以僅有的技術和破碎的知識來換取生活所需，實際上僅為追求 產值收益但卻以文化傳承為名，相對於此，是嘗試建構完整的文化知識系統，以文 化經濟作為文化得以傳承延續的方式。而文化傳統所扮演的角色，是當代織作者的 參照者、而非復原的對象。最終，傳統手工藝在當代人群的身上具有不同層次的作 用和意義。
This paper is based on fieldwork carried out among weavers of rush-woven objects in Yuanli (Miaoli) and among Truku weavers in Sioulin (Hualien) in Taiwan. Today crafts in local society are often related to the development of cultural industries and therefore cultural commoditization has become an issue. Here, I argue that the relationship between crafts and commoditization is more complicated. Hence, it is necessary to further divide the different subject matters and the process in exploring the commoditization of crafts. More importantly, the cultural economy is not necessarily obstructive but can be a means of cultural transmission. Traditional crafts, being the intangible cultural heritage of the local society, are crucial to an individual’s identity and cultural transmission of culture. Accordingly, it is urgent to establish the knowledge system of traditional crafts in contemporary society.
