從祀孔廟意謂著進入儒門聖域，身後獲得傳承聖人之道的肯認，因此，即使國君仍是最終的裁定者，但對從祀儒者的取捨進黜，卻成為朝臣廷議中政治勢力的角力場域、儒門流衍中道統嬗遞的攻駁論壇，荀子在明代黜祀的歷程，即是一鮮明之例。本文首先梳理明初至嘉靖時期奏章、《實錄》、儒士對荀子從祀之評議，說明荀子遭黜祀的真正原因，實不在於經典著述不足，亦非德行表現之疵，而是在於所言性惡、禮偽、非十二子等主張，不見容於當時逐步邁向學術主流的程朱理學；其次，指出罷祀事件中所昭示明儒建構的從祀判準思維，應是從「報功」的觀點來衡量，亦即對「聖人之道」的護持、傳衍中有所貢獻者。最後說明，若依照明儒所建構的思維模式，從祀與否應取決於儒者在當時代的發展及所肩負的意義，則在儒學動態發展與多元趨勢的前提上，荀子可說是與現代儒學接榫的最佳人選，若得以復祀孔廟，必當深具時代意義。
