This paper utilizes the short story "T'ang Hsuan," written during the eighth century, to explore the life and mentality in old T'ang aristocratic circles. Topics examined in the paper include: marriage patterns, family life, death rituals, world views, and values and the conduct of women. It is hoped that certain descriptions in fiction may prove to be good sources for glimpses into the everyday life of a society in the remote past.
