人名是人類普同的一種制度；但在不同的社會中，相關的習俗與意義卻頗不相同。由於人名涉及了一個社會的許多面向，透過這個制度的探討，常可發現該社會的若干特色來。本文以一個海岸阿美族村落（鳥鳴）的人名資料為主，討論其與異族觀之間的關連。 概略地說，本文認為，阿美族社會中的一些價值，不但超越了時間的限宥，而且對於人名制度以及異族觀皆有影響。再者，一個有趣的現象是：Payrag（本省漢人的統稱）與Dipog（日本人的統稱）這兩個名詞原本皆是對異族的統稱，但從西元1920年開始，村中陸續有人用此做為人名。本文試圖由人名制度的特徵與演變出發，探討上述現象的歷史背景與意義。本文主張，上述的現象應放在村落歷史的脈絡來理解。換言之，不論是人名制度或是異族觀都是在此一歷史過程中逐漸演變。但更重要的是，村民對外來異族的觀感，一方面反映在人名制度的發展中，另一方面在異族觀的形塑過程中，人名制度也扮演相當關鍵的角色。
As a common human institution, the customs and meanings of personal names in different societies are various. Due to its relations with many aspects of society, through an investigation of this institution, many features of a society can be revealed. This paper intends to discuss the relations between personal names and the images of outsiders among the Ami in an eastern Taiwan coastal village. This paper points out some Ami social values, which are so important that they overcome the limit of time. Not only personal names but also the images of the outsiders are all effected by these values. Furthemore, Payrag and Dipog were originally two generic terms for the Taiwanese and the Japanese. An interesting phenomenon is that: after 1920 many villagers started to use them as personal names. On the basis of a survey on the features and development of the personal naming system, this paper tries to explain the historical background and meaning of this phenomenon. The author argues that all the analysis shall be done in the historical background of the village. In other words, both the personal names and the images of outsiders are developed in this historical process. Most improtantly, on the one hand the villagers' images of outsiders are reflected in the development of the personal naming system, and on the other hand the personal naming system plays a significant role during the construction of the villagers' images of the outsiders.
