Abstract
The purposes of this study were: 1.to construct the Sportspersonship Inventory for college athletes and compare the differences of goal orientation, self-determinted motivation in sport, values, and sportspersonship between different background variables. 2.to understand the relationships among goal orientation, self-determinted motivation in sport, values, and sportspersonship. 3.to explore the effects of self-determinted motivation in sport on sportspersonship through the goal orientation and values. There were 381 subjects drawn from level I college atheletes (243 males and 138 females; Avg. 20.11±2.17yr). The first stage was to construct the Sportspersonship Inventory (48 items) through the interview and references. By using exploratory factor analysis, there were five factors in Sportspersonship Inventory, which were respect of game etiquette, negative strategy, emotional management, respect of rules and judgement, and persistence. The reliability of internal consistency of five subscales was ranging from 0.63~0.80. The Cronbach’s α of the Sportspersonship Inventory was 0.85, and the accounted variance was 54.28%. The second stage was to conduct the confirmatory factor analysis to examine the goodness-of-fit of the hypothetical measurement model. The results of analysis indicated that there was good construct validity. The findings were as the follows: 1. there were differences between dependent variables with different gender and background varliables. In negative strategy, male scored higher than female. In sportspersonship and persistence, the non-contact sport subgroup scored higher than contact sport subgroup. In negative strategy, contact sport subgroup scored higher than non-contact subgroup. 2. In contact sport subgroup, task orientation and ego orientation separately correlated with self-determinted motivation and sportsperosnship, but task orientation correlated with negative strategy negatively. Value of personal purpose, value of ethical strategy, and value of ability strategy were correlated positively with self-determined motivation. Value of personal purpose and value of ethical strategy were correlated with spotspersonship positively. In non-contact sport subgroup, there were positive correlations between task orientation and self-determinted motivation and between value (personal purpose, ethical strategy and social purpose) and sportspersonship. 3. In mediating effect of motivation, the relationships between task orientation and sportspersonship were mediated by self-determinted motivation in non-contact sport subgroup. The relationships between value personal purpose and sportspersonship were also mediated by self-determinted motivation. According to the results of the study, there were some discussions and suggestions for the future studies.
