This study uses Apriori algorithm in data mining to investigate the correlation between the learning efficiency and other significant influencing factors in vocational education. Research samples were taken from a particular vocational school in northern Taiwan from 2002 to 2004 which enrolled either through recommendation or through entrance examination. In this study, the students' first year grade in English, Math., Accounting, and Basic Computer Concept were used as the evaluation criteria for their learning efficiency. Besides, influencing factors that regard to gender, the mode of enrollment, and the regional location of their graduating middle school were investigated. Research results shown that 1) Gender: Significant difference was found in the learning efficiency between male and female. Female students perform significantly better than male students. 2) Mode of enrollment: There is significant difference in the learning efficiency of students enrolled under different mode. Which means the entrance examination perform better significantly. 3) Rural-urban difference: Significant rural-urban difference exists in the learning efficiency in vocation education. Students from urban area perform better in basic courses, yet worse in Accounting. The results from this study can be used as reference for vocational schools in formulating their recruiting strategy, and also allow teachers understanding the correction between student characteristics and their academic performance, even thereby provide appropriate assistance when needed.
