Purpose: The purposes of this study were to explore the current situations and the differences among selected demographic variables of effective teaching performances (ETP) for the physical education (PE) teachers in the universities in Taiwan. Methods: Firstly, five experienced PE teachers were interviewed. Based on the qualitative data, a questionnaire was developed and was sent by mail to the PE teachers in the universities. Purposive sampling was used for the targeted sample population. 358 (71.6%) completed surveys were received and analyzed. Results: The results were as follows: The current situations of characteristic levels of ETP were satisfactory in the universities. The mean score of “teaching strategies” was higher than the other dimensions of ETP. There was no significant difference in ETP among teachers from different gender, educational background, and in the public or private universities. There were significant differences in all the dimensions of ETP among teachers from different teaching seniority and work attribute. Conclusion: The ‘teaching strategies’ of PE teachers in the universities in Taiwan were better than other ETP dimensions, thus the ‘teaching atmospheres’ need to improve. The teachers who had best ETP with twenty years above of teaching seniority and the second chief of administration.
