The scholar Fang Hao (1910-1980) created a new era for research in the post-war period. His field of expertise was the analysis of the gazetteers of Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. Dating from his paper ”Matteo Ricci in the Gazetteers of Taiwan” presented in 1949, Fang Hao began carding, collating and conducting textual criticism on the documents and archives at his disposal. These techniques allowed a multi-faceted and rich understand of the primary sources, and contributed a scholarly basis to the understanding of Taiwanese History. This paper analyzes his capability as a mainlander to understand local issues and the reasons for his interest. It addresses Fang Hao's methods of research and interpretation of the gazetteers. The paper describes achievements in this area, and how later researchers have advanced this discipline.
