Pingdan, or simplicity and plainness, is the ideal of the artists, including Mei Yaochen, in the Song Dynasty. However, how could an artistic remain plain or pedestrian in his works in the face of bereavement and deaths of his loved ones? Based on this research question, this study set out to investigate over 20 Mei's mourning poems and analyzed how Mei Yaochen continued and transformed the traditional pattern of mourning poems and expressed his affection with his own literary techniques such as-coherence in meaning, recollection as the theme, changing between reality and imagination.
