This is a pioneer study addressing general health promoting oriented lifestyle in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to examine the suitability of the newly developed Chinese version Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) modified from the product of Walker et. al (1987). HPLP related information of 920 residents in northern Taiwan was acquired and examined through a questionnaire survey. The Chinese version HPLP was developed through backtranslation, expert content validity analysis, Cronbach Alpha test, factor analysis, as well as construct validity and criterion validity analysis. Six factors including self - actualization, responsibility of health, ineter - personal support, exercise, stress management and nutrition are derived from factor analysis. The 40 adioted utens cab explain 48.19% of the variance. The general scale of internal consistency of this new version is 0.92, with subscale ranging from 0.69 to 0.84. Besides, most of the selected items meet the criteria for the development of a good scale. In comparison to the original unmodified Chinese version of HPLP, the new version has similar construct validity, less items, and beeter explaination capability of the general variance. Mreover, the excellent construct and criterion validities, which were not found in original version, indicated the modified Chinese HPLP is an appropraite tool to examine adult health promoting lifestyle in Taiwan.
