The purpose of this study was two-fold, first to examine the moderated effect of moral atmosphere on the relation between goal orientations and moral functioning; second, to examine the mediation effect of self-determination motivation on the relation between goal orientations and moral functioning. Participants were 344 division I high school basketball players (189 males, 155 females). The average age was 16.49±1.07 years old. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires to measure goal orientation, perceived moral atmosphere, self-determination motivation and moral functioning. The major findings were as follows:(1) Task orientation positively predicted self-determination motivation. (2) Ego orientation negatively predicted moral functioning for males. For females, Social orientation positively predicted moral judgement and behavior, ego orientation negatively predicted moral behavior. (3) For males, Coach’s moral atmosphere has moderated the relation between ego orientation and moral judgement. When Coach’s moral atmosphere was low, high ego orientation participants reported low moral judgement than low ego orientation participants. (4) For males, perceived moral atmosphere has moderated the relation between social orientation and moral judgement. When perceived moral atmosphere was low, high social orientation participants reported low moral judgement than low social orientation participants. When perceived moral atmosphere was high, high social orientation participants reported high moral judgement than low social orientation participants. There were the same significant interaction effects between task orientation and perceived moral atmosphere in moral judgement. Coach’s moral atmosphere was the stronger moderator. (5) For males, task orientation has affected moral functioning by self-determination motivation indirectly.
Discussions are provided in term of the findings and theoretical framework. Practical implication and future research directions are also recommended.
