Technology Education (TE) has been confronted with the issues such as indeterminate core mission and unclear role. The issues can be alleviated by an objective knowledge map of TE research to discern the direction and prospects of technology education. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the sub-fields, genres, characteristics and trends of research literature on TE in either Chinese or English published in 1970~2013 through a co-citation analysis, which is a strand of bibliometrics. Three database, WoS, Scopus and AiritiLibrary, were investigated and every 10 years was selected as a period of discussion. Consequently, it is found as follows. (1) TE research has rapidly progressed in some countries other than Taiwan; (2) The disciplines integrated with TE are education and educational research, engineering, computer science, social sciences and medicine; (3) TE research topics have evolved from industrial arts, technical and vocational education, technological literacy education and curriculum development, to the pedagogical skills of technology teachers; (4) The international TE research front tends to be "technology teacher’s professional development”, while “curriculum and teaching materials” in Taiwan; (5) The TE research clusters in different periods are complementary and research topics and fronts act in continuation; (6) The high cited classical literature of TE published earlier, includes 23 books, and 27 journals; (7) The core literature of TE, includes 32 books, and 27 journals; (8) The research dimension of TE “assessment” has not yet been drawn necessary attention globally and domestically. The results of this study can not only help the stakeholders of TE to review and have better understanding of the evolution of research topic and research front, but also can serve as the research methods in the areas other than TE.
