自現代藝術起,藝術家都以「為藝術而藝術」一詞強調作品的與世隔絕情懷,以及創作者內在的崇高情操。這種帶有禁慾主義色彩的現代藝術被賦予改善社會秩序的重責大任,而其制定的審美標準成為人們判斷品味高低、文化好壞的絕對準則。現代藝術與世俗之間的界線被劃分得相當清楚且絕對。到了後現代,藝術發展有了重大的轉變,藝術家逐漸拋棄那些崇高的品味標準,將輕鬆、歡樂、普遍的大眾文化帶入藝術領域,刻意的讓藝術品帶有世俗氣息,以帶領大眾一起走進藝術領域。這也許是後現代美學最具有意義的轉變,後現代藝術家以誇耀的手法刻意彰顯日常生活的愉悅, 這種視覺歡愉的經驗遠離了現代藝術對崇高精神的要求,藝術的美感內涵不再是帶有痛苦或阻滯感,相反的,這些作品裡充滿世俗的歡聲笑語,它的態度親切、表達方式直接、清晰、簡單,這種通俗易懂的創作風格,使藝術從少數菁英掌控的高級俱樂部轉向一個沒有階層限制的開放性場域。
With the onset of modern art, artists have adopted the phrase of “Art for Art's Sake” to emphatically express the cloistered perception of their works and the inner sublime sentiment as being a creator. Modern art that seemingly embraced the spirit of Asceticism is endowed with the mighty responsibility of restoring social order. Aesthetic standards set within the category of modern art have become the absolute criteria that we use to judge the level of tastes and cultures. The boundary between the modern art and the secular world is distinct and absolute. As time enters into the postmodern era, the development of art takes a drastic turn. Artists have progressively let go the standards of art. Instead, they brought the popular cultures into the art field, and their works were purposely created with a smack of worldliness in order to lead the general public into the realm of arts. This could be the most significant change for the postmodern aesthetics. Postmodern artists usually intentionally glorify the fun of life. The experience of visual pleasures as such departs from the sublime aspiration held by the modern art. The aesthetic of art is no longer praised through pain or stagnation. On the contrary, the works of postmodern art are rich with worldly pleasures and laughter. They are presented with a common touch and are expressed in ways that are direct, clear and simple. This popular and easy-to-understand style in creation has released art from the control of the elite and sent it towards an open field where people of all classes can participate and enjoy.
