This paper not only gives a brief account of the life story of Alfonso Vagnone, but also analyzes the contents of Chapter One of his work, Cijia Sisyue. The whole life of Alfonso Vagnone was mainly divided into five stages: (1) The period of growing up in his hometown; (2) The period of further studying in Macau; (3) The period of teaching in Nanjing; (4) The period of lecturing in Macau; and (5) The period of contributing in Shanxi. The viewpoints of Alfonso Vagnone in Chapter One of Cijia Sisyue can be summarized into seven items: First, monogamy is suggested. Second, it is advocated that women should not make five selected kinds of statements. Third, it is proposed that couples should be considerate to each other. Fourth, there are four things being the obstacles of harmony. Fifth, there are six things that husbands should avoid doing. Sixth, there are five virtues that virtuous women should follow. Seventh, it is emphasized that couples should not part or abandon from each other. Of these seven items, there are two characteristics. One is that the hardworking spirit of Alfonso Vagnone in his "attentive and professional teaching" is definitely admirable to people; and the other is that his enthusiastic advocating of the ethical principles and standards for families is advantageous in the educating of the society. As to the defects of his viewpoints, there are two points worth mentioning. One is that Alfonso Vagnone has much negative observation of women, and his viewpoints on women seem not objective and not fair. The other is that his viewpoints do not escape from the "male-centered" thinking, which is disadvantageous to the equal rights of the two sexes.
