Printed media was already the primary format for novels during the Japanese Colonial Age. As the first Chinese-language journal in Taiwan, The Literary Journal of Taiwan (1919-1925) stands apart from other journals, was the first to publish serial novels. It is presumable, that this coterie journal, published during the colonial period, had more than only commercial interest in reserving considerable space for serials, especially, when times were hard for the publishing business. Focusing onto the principles of journal foundations, such as female role in journals, newspapers and other mass media, as far as on the basic of the era, in which journal appeared, readers opinion and the significance of creating the first serial novel, this paper analyzes the female characters in the novel. Throughout discovering the role of women in the novels, this paper attempts understand coterie journal position from the perspective of social elites and expectations of society for women.
