Ⅰ.Introduction: Zen of gazing at words and Zen of silent illumination are two mainstream of Zen sect in the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) Ⅱ.The core thought in Zen of gazing at words: (1)Meaning: completely understand zen master's words and bring out insight and purity of mind. (2)Condition of mastering in zen of gazing at words: (a)honesty confidence (b)strong will (c)self-effort (d)magnaminous ambition (3)Method of insight: (a)method of descarte's doubt (b)critical method (4)The content and its characteristics in zen of gazing words. Ⅲ.Basic idea in zen of silent illumination: It consists in silence meditation without talk, in order to show true self. Ⅳ.Conclusion: These two schoos come from Hui-Neng method of Zen. Though their different style produce their thought, but their aims is to become buddha and realization of complete awakenness.
