　　　　　口述歷史是一門「做中學」的學術領域。口述歷史之格物與致知端在創意與實踐。本文冀以筆者1997年至1999年間在臺北士林區外雙溪臨溪社區之錄音口訪田野經驗來檢驗中英文文獻中所記載之有關口述歷史在理論與實務方面之操作原則與知識。 　　筆者在文中透過各總理論與實務之面向去探討口述歷史之本質與實踐有關之議題，例如：口述歷史之定義及特質，口述歷史與傳統史學主要不同之點何在，如何成為一個成功的口訪者及口述歷史方法與其他社會科學研究方法有何相輔相成之處等等。 　　依據臨溪社區之錄音口訪經驗，筆者企圖替口述歷史初學者擬就一個具有參考價值的錄音口訪流程，包括：口訪設計、前置作業、訪談預約及錄音抄本製作等等。 　　雖然口述歷史方法與口述史料無法取代傳統之史學研究方法與文字史料，但筆者發現歷史學者在當代與現代史之領域內若能以文字史料為主，口述歷史為輔，必能收紅花綠葉、相得益彰之效。
